Sarto Custom Bikes in Los Angeles

Your Frame Does Not Exist Yet

A Sarto is not picked off a wall. It is built around your measurements in the Veneto, one frame at a time, in carbon tubes joined and wrapped by hand. We start every Sarto here in West LA with a fit, because the fit is what gets sent to Italy.

Sarto Builds Frames the Way Bike Improve Builds Wheels

Sarto has been building frames outside Padua since the 1950s, first in steel and now in carbon, and has quietly made frames for marques you would recognize. Same idea as the workshop here. One builder, one rider, one frame.

  • Tube to tube carbon, not a stock mold: most custom carbon is a mold with your name on it. Sarto joins and wraps individual tubes, so the geometry is genuinely yours rather than the nearest available size.
  • Made to your numbers: stack, reach, angles, and tube selection all change with the rider. Two Sartos of the same nominal size are rarely the same frame.
  • Ride quality is a specification: tube layup can be tuned toward comfort or stiffness. You tell them how you want it to feel and they build to that.
  • Paint is part of the commission: hand finished in Italy, and the one place on the bike where you get to be indulgent.

A Sarto pairs naturally with a hand built wheelset, since it is the same principle applied to the other half of the bike.

Sarto Fitting and Service in Los Angeles

On every other bike we sell, the fit follows the purchase. On a Sarto it comes first, because the fit is the order.

  • Pro-Fit, before anything else: your measurements are what gets sent to Italy. There is no adjusting the frame afterward, so this is the single most important appointment in the process. Book a fitting
  • Build consultation with Nir: geometry, tube selection, ride feel, and component choices, worked out in person rather than through a configurator. Talk to Nir
  • Custom Wheels: a bespoke frame on catalog wheels is half a bike. Rim, hub, spoke count, and tension built to your weight and your riding. Custom wheels
  • Expert Assembly: internal routing, carbon torque specs, and a paint job you do not want marked. Built once, built properly. Assembly service
  • Tune Up and Drivetrain: you will keep this bike a long time. Annual service is what makes that true. Bike tune-up
  • Wash and Detail: hand finished paint deserves better than a hose. Bike washing

Three steps, a few months, and a frame that will not fit anyone else properly.

You get measured

A full Pro-Fit on the bench in West LA. Body proportions, flexibility, riding position, and how you actually ride, not how you think you do.

The frame gets built

Your numbers go to the Veneto. Tubes are selected, mitered, joined, and wrapped by hand, then finished to your specification.

You choose the paint

The part everyone enjoys. Hand finished in Italy, and effectively unlimited.

Why Riders Go Custom

Four reasons people stop buying stock frames. If one of these sounds familiar, it is worth a conversation.

  • Stock sizes never quite work: you are between two sizes, and both compromise something. A custom frame removes the compromise instead of hiding it in the stem.
  • Your proportions are unusual: long legs, short torso, leg length difference, or an old injury that dictates position. Stock geometry does not account for any of it.
  • You want the last bike: you have owned enough bikes to know what you like. This is the one you stop replacing.
  • You want a specific feel: comfortable over five hours, or stiff under a sprint. On a Sarto that is a build decision rather than a compromise you accept.

Where to Ride a Sarto

A frame built around your position pays off on long climbs, not short ones. These are the roads worth the commission.

  • Stunt Road to Saddle Peak: the Malibu benchmark. Long, steady, and unforgiving of a position that is even slightly wrong.
  • Rock Store and Mulholland Highway: the Sunday classic. Rolling, fast, and the ride where a custom fit stops being theoretical.
  • Tuna Canyon: one way down, technical, and a genuine test of how a frame handles when you stop pedaling.
  • Encinal and Decker: quieter Malibu backcountry. Long enough that comfort matters more than watts.
  • Angeles Crest: the big day. Hours of climbing, thin air, and the ride people buy a Sarto for.

Living With a Sarto

A custom frame is a fifteen year bike if you treat it like one.

Torque, every time

Custom carbon has real numbers and no margin for a confident guess. A torque wrench is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy.

Protect the paint

Frame tape at the cable contact points and the chainstay. Hand finished paint is not a warranty item.

Stay on top of bearings

Headset and bottom bracket are out of sight and easy to ignore. On a bike you plan to keep, they are what determines whether you actually do.

Re-fit when your body changes

The frame is locked to the position you had when it was ordered. Injury, weight change, or a few years of flexibility loss all move the target. Come back and we will adjust around it.

Why Commission Your Sarto Through Bike Improve

A custom frame is only as good as the numbers it was built from, and the numbers come from the fit. Nir runs the fit, specs the build, laces the wheels, and assembles the bike himself, on one bench in West LA. One person accountable from the measurement through to the first ride.

Frequently

Asked Questions

What people want answered before committing to a frame that gets built for them alone.

Is Bike Improve a Sarto dealer?

Yes. Bike Improve commissions and builds Sarto frames from our Los Angeles workshop. Call 310-400-0363 to start.

A custom Sarto frameset starts well above a stock carbon frame, and the complete build depends on components, wheels, and paint. Call and we will price a real build rather than quote a number that means nothing.

Weeks, not days. Lead time varies with the workshop’s queue and your paint choice. We will give you a real date before you commit.

If stock geometry already fits you well, honestly no. Custom earns its cost when you sit between sizes, have unusual proportions, need a position dictated by injury, or want a specific ride quality you cannot buy off the shelf. The fit appointment will tell us which of those applies to you.

A fit. Your measurements are the order, so everything starts on the bench in West LA. Bring your current bike and we will work from what is and is not working on it.
